Tips for Avoiding Mosquito Bites
- Stay indoors during dawn, dusk and early evening when mosquitoes are more likely to bite.

- Protect your dog or cat with a product made especially for pets that repels mosquitoes.

What Do Mosquitoes Look Like?
Mosquitoes have slender bodies with long legs and scaled wings. They are typically smaller than 15mm in length.

Are Mosquitoes Dangerous?
It is often over-looked that mosquitoes can carry very dangerous diseases including West Nile virus, yellow fever, and malaria. People don’t often think about malaria in this part of the world, but there are over 1,000 cases of malaria in North America every year.
To protect yourself from mosquito bites, use a repellent approved by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Also make sure that you avoid contact with the eyes and mouth when applying repellent.
Should I be concerned about the Zika virus?
We’ve been hearing about Zika virus for a while now and its effects on people. The virus can cause mild flu-like symptoms and is believed to be linked to the birth defects in fetuses if a woman becomes infected while pregnant. Recently, researchers have discovered the virus in Aedes albopictus, otherwise knows as the Asian Tiger mosquito. This species of mosquito is common in the United States, as well as here in Kentucky and Ohio.
Some precautions to take to help avoid this unwanted pest and its virus: stay indoors during dawn and dusk hours when mosquitoes are most active; wear insect repellent containing DEET; wear long sleeves and/or pants when you can; and remove any and all sources of standing water around your property that mosquitoes may breed in. Our mosquito program will be an asset to treat the areas mosquitoes like to shelter during the heat of the day: under leaves in bushes, trees and other exterior foliage as well as under decks and other man-made structures.
